Thinking About Getting Your First Credit Card
Getting your first credit card is always a big deal. Unfortunately most of us do not do our research when applying for one for the first time. The biggest mistake that I think people make is not reading the fine print. Most of the time, with a first time credit card you have no existing credit.
There are quite a few credit card companies out there that are willing to give you credit but they usually charge a lot to open the account and activate the card. They tell you that you are getting a card with a three hundred dollar credit limit but when you read the fine print you realize it says they have about three or four different charges that they automatically add to the card. When you finally get your card, you end up with fifty dollars or so charges as soon as you get it and you have to pay interest on top of what you charge.
My best advice to people applying for their first credit card is to take the time to read all of the application. On the back is usually a list of everything you have to pay for to get the card activated. Also, carefully read the information about the the interest rate. There is a lot to read however you will kick yourself late if you don’t take the time to do it before hand.
If you aren’t familiar with the terms they use, you can call the company and a customer service representative will probably be able to help you. Or you can always ask a friend or a parent who has the same card.
Just don’t take the first credit card offer you get, shop around and make sure you find the one that is right for you. Check out First Savings credit card also. They’re usually a good card to start with.
take your time when applying for your first card – they can be a blessing or a curse, all depending on how you handle it.
